The Help needs none in the box office
The relatively low-budget drama The Help has triumphed in the US-Canada box office in its third week, defeating remakes, reboots, prequels and sequels and accumulating over 71.8 million. Adapted from Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller with the same title, the Disney-DreamWorks’s picture, starring Emma Stone and Viola Davis, tells the story of the black domestic workers in 1960’s Mississippi.
Fox’s The Rise of the Planet of The Apes dropped to the second place after two weeks at the top. The prequel to the 1968 Science Fiction thriller has made 133.8 millions.
Other big budget, new releases failed live to their hype. The gimmick of Spy Kids 4D, which enables audience to smell what characters smell, failed to attract audiences, making only 12m in its debut.
The remakes of Conan of the Barbarians and Fright Nights didn’t fair any better, bringing in a meagre 10m and 8.3m respectively.
Another box office disappointment was Focus’s romantic drama, One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgees. Based on David Nicholls best-seller, the pic opened with 5.1m.
