Steven Spielbergs animated adaptation of Belgian comic artist, The Adventures of Tintin, opened number one in 17 of 19 territories,grossing $55.8 million outside of the US.
The adventures of Tintin tells the story of a boyish reporter, Tintin, who embarks on a perilous mission to uncovered a secret treasure. Though immensely popular in Europe, the iconic comic character is virtually unknown in the US.
Distributed by Sony and Paramount and produced by Peter Jackson, The 3D motion-capture animation, will not be released in the US until the second week on December.
Another animation from DreamWorks, Puss in Boots, claimed the second spot with $17 million, followed by Paramounts horror flick, Paranormal Activity 3, adding $17 million to its last weekend intake.
