Taking $34 million in its opening weekend, Paramount’s low budget, horror flick The Devil Inside usurped the US box office first spot from Tom Cruises Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which took $20.5 million in its third week in theatres.
Like Paramounts previous releases Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield, which were massive hits in 2007 and 2008 respectively, the independently-produced The Devil inside was bought for only $1 million.
Trailing way behind is Guy Ritchies Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which landed in 3 place with $14.1 million.
David Finchers remake of The Girl with The Dragon Tatto followed in the 4th place, taking $11.3 million.
Dropping to the fifth place is Alvin And Chipmunks: Chipwrecked with $9.5 million.
