It was a record-breaking non holiday weekend in the US box office, as four films each debuted with well over $20 million in ticket sales, lead by the romantic comedy The Vow, which collected an impressive $41.7 million.

Starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, The Vow is based on the true story of a woman who looses her memory following a car accident and consequently struggles to accept her husband back in her life.

While The Vow was largely watched by ladies, Denzel Washingtons thriller Safe House found more appeal among over-30 men, accuming $39.3 million and landing in the second place.

In the film, which also stars Ryan Reynolds, Washington plays a rebellious CIA agent who heads to South Africa on a mission. It marks the second highest-opening for the 57-year-old star behind his 2007 hit American Gangnster, which launched with $43.6 million.

It was also a good weekend for 3-D movies as they remain attractive enough for audience to shell out a few extra bucks for their pricier tickets . The 3-D adventure sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, starring Dwayne Johnson, beat expectations, grossing $27.6 million while the 3-D re-release of Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace took in a respectable $23 million.

Sensing the commercial power of the 3-D and witnessing the success of the re-release of Disneys classic animated titles in the popular format, filmmaker George Lucas has converted six Star Wars film in 3-D and hopes to release them in chronological order.

The top four were followed by previous weekends box office champions: Chronicle ($12.3 million), Daniel Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black (10.3), Liam Neeson’s The Grey ($5.1 million), Drew Barrymores Big Miracle ($3.9 million), George Clooneys The Descendants ($3.5 million) and Kate Beckinsales Underworld: Awakening ($2.5 million).
