Gary Oldman has been honoured as the best actor of last year at the Empire Awards, for his Oscar-nominated role as Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The film also took the prizes for the Best Thriller and the Best British Film.

But the big winner of the night, taking Best Film and Best Director, was the final instalment of the Harry Potter franchise, Part 2 of the Deathly Hallows.

One of the biggest British box office earners of the year, The Inbetweeners, won the Best Comedy, while Best Sci-Fi went to Kenneth Branagh’s Thor and Ben Wheatley’s Kill List was the Best Horror.

Olivia Colman’s performance in Tyrannosaur earned her the Best Actress award.

Michael Fassbender, whose output over the past twelve months included Jane Eyre, Shame and A Dangerous Method, was named the Empire Hero, the Director Tim Burton was given the Empire Legend award and director Ron Howard received the Empire Inspiration award.

Steven Spielberg’s Tintin took the Best 3D prize, over Hugo, Harry Potter, Transformers and Thor.

Looking ahead to the talent of the future, the Best Newcomer honours went to Tim Hiddleston for Thor and Felicity Jones for Like Crazy.

The editor of Empire magazine, Mark Dinning, said The readers of Empire are the smartest academy out there and this year they have picked the very best winners from a terrific 12 months.”
