Fairy-tale movie, Snow White and the Huntsman beat industry expectations and won the top spot in US box office, debuting with $56.3 million. It has also added $39.3 million in the international box office, totalling  $95.6 million worldwide over the weekend.

Starring Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart, the film still has a way to go before covering its production cost of $170 million. Nonetheless, its weekend box office success has been a relief for Universal, who has endured two flops recently with Battleship and Five Years of Engagement.

Unlike the comedic version of the fairy-tale princess, Mirror Mirror, which was released earlier this year by Relativity Media and made only $62.4 million for its entire run in the US, Snow White and the Huntsman is imbued with action and special effects, which helped drawing in male in addition to female audience.  Furthermore, many of Twilights fans flocked to see Kristin Stewart, who plays the princess in the movie.

Dropping to the second place was Men in Black 3 with $29.3 million in its second weekend, raising its cume to $112.3 million in the US box office. Overseas however, the sci-fi sequel remains number 1, adding $79.6 million for an international take of $274.6 and a worldwide gross of $386.9 million.

Although relegated to the third spot, Disneys superhero sensation The Avengers continued to break records, adding $20.3 million this weekend for a total of $552.7 million to become the 3rd highest grossing film domestically, behind Avatar and Titanic.

The action movie broke the same record overseas, as it added $12.4 million over the weekend, pushing its international total to $802.5 million and its worldwide earning to $1.36 billion. Its now the 3rd highest grosser worldwide after Avatar and Titanic.

Trailing far behind in the fourth place was action movie Battleship with only $4.8 million in the US and $1.5 internationally. It was followed by Baron Sacha Cohens farcical comedy The Dictator, which made $4.7 million in the US and $6.5 overseas.

Americans are still flocking to see the British light-hearted drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which made $4.6 million over the weekend, lifting its US earning to $25.5 million. The low budget film has made over $107 million worldwide.

But all eyes are on Ridley Scotts Prometheus, which got off to a solid start overseas with $35 million and expected to rule the US box office on its debut next week.
