Director Martin Scorsese is to receive the British Academys top accolade, a fellowship, at the Baftas film award ceremony on Feb, 12th this year, in recognition of a lifetimes contribution to film.

The helmer of masterpieces such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The Departed has been nominated nine times for a Bafta and won three times for Goodfellas.

The Oscar-winning directors latest movie, Hugo, has so far received several nominations for best picture by different organizations, including a Golden Globe nomination.

The 69 year old will be joining other notable fellows including Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor.

 The nominations for the 2012 Bafta awards will be announced on Jan. 17.
