Academy announces Governors Awards

The organisation that hands out the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has voted to honour three industry veterans with Governors Awards.

Honorary Awards will be handed to the actor James Earl Jones – known for playing Vice Admiral James Greer in Patriot Games and for voicing Darth Vadar – and the makeup artist Dick Smith – who began his career in 1945 as NBC’s first makeup man, won an Oscar for Amadeus and trained many of the next generation of award winners, including Rick Baker, who won his seventh Oscar this year for The Wolfman.

The TV presenter and executive Oprah Winfrey, who received an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in The Color Purple, is being honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for her philanthropic efforts.

Each of them will receive an Oscar Statuette at the annual Governors Awards dinner in November.
