Action movie Act of Valor, starring real-life Navy Seals, commanded the number 1 spot in the US box with a $24 million debut.
The film follows a group of Navy Seals as they race against time to stop a terror attack on US soil by suicide bombers.
Another new release, Tyler Perrys Good Deeds, about a business man getting jolted out of his fairly scripted life when he meets a cleaning lady in his office, claimed the second spot with a $16 million, followed by Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which earned $13.4 million in its 3rd weekend since its released.
Last weekends champion, Denzel Washingtons Safe House, retreated to the 4th place with $11.4 million, reaching a total earning of $98.1 million since its release.
Another former box-office champion, The Vow, rounded out the top five with $10 million for a three-week total of $103 million.
Other new releases such as Jennifer Aniston comedy, Wanderlust, and Amanda Seyfried thriller, Gone, flopped, opening with a mere $6.6 million and $5 million respectively.
Last nights Best Picture winner, The Artist, added another $3 million to its coffers, totalling $31.9 US box office taking, while Hugo, which claimed 5 Oscars in the technical categories, made only $1.6 million for a total of $69.4 since its release. Unlike the Artist, which cost only $20 million to make, Hugo’s production cost went over $150 million.
