Released only in a limited number of Imax theatres, Tom Cruise action flick Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol raked an impressive $13 million this weekend, taking the third spot in the US box office, and $68 millions worldwide. Its success has been attributed to packaging it with a six-minute prologue of next summers Chris Nolan The Dark Knight Rises. Both films are released by Warner bros.

Another Warner bros picture, Guy Richis sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, claimed the top spot in the US box office with $40 million- a massive drop from the box office intake of the first instalment, which took $60 million on its first week release.

Another box office disappointment was Foxs animation sequel Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which landed in the second place grossing a weak $23.5 million, about $15 million less than what audience polling had predicted and almost half what of its predecessors intake on its first weekends release in 2007 and 2009.

Trailing way behind the top three are New Years Eve with $7.4 million, The Sitter with $4.4 million, The Twillight Saga: Breaking Dawn with $4.3 million, Young Adult with $3.7 million, Hugo with $3.6 million, and Arthur Christmas with $3.6 million.

The decline in the box office sales was felt across the board, down with 12% compared with the same period of last year. Studios marketing executives attributed these lacklustre results to the fact that kids are still at school, and they expect a brighter picture during the Christmas holiday.
