Bertolucci to get first honorary Palme d'Or

The organisers of the Cannes Film Festival are to add a new award to the annual event.
An honorary Palme d’Or will be handed out during the opening ceremony from this year.
The Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci has been chosen as the first honoree.
Bertolucci, who’s won two Oscars – for writing and directing The Last Emperor – has twice been shortlisted for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, but has never won.
Honorary awards have previously been handed to other “important filmmakers, whose work is authoritative” but who’ve never won the award. Woody Allen received one in 2002 and Clint Eastwood got one in 2009.
The organisers have decided to make the awarding of an honorary Palme d’Or an annual event.
This year’s festival will open with Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and run until May 22, when the jury, headed by Robert de Niro, will hand out a series of prizes.
