Boulders, ballet, mirth and misery make Spirits shortlist

Danny Boyle’s LFF closer 127 Hours, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, small-town drama Winter’s Bone and sperm donor family comedy The Kids Are All Right are among the most nominated films for the Independent Spirits Awards.
They’re joined by Ben Stiller’s darkly comic Greenberg in the Best Film category, and John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole in the competition for Best Director.
Winter’s Bone and The Kids Are All Right are also in contention for the Best Screenplay prize, alongside Rabbit Hole, Please Give and Life During Wartime.
The six nominees for Best Lead Actress including Annette Bening (The Kids Are All Right), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Greta Gerwig (Greenberg), Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine).
The Best Male Lead nominees are James Franco (127 Hours), Ben Stiller (Greenberg), Aaron Eckhart (Rabbit Hole), John C Reilly (Cyrus) and outsider Ronald Bronstein (Daddy Longlegs).
The nominees in the supporting acting categories include Dale Dickey and John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), Naomi Watts and Samuel L Jackson (Mother and Child), Daphne Rubin-Vega and John Ortiz (Jack Goes Boating), Allison Janney (Life During Wartime) and Mark Ruffallo (The Kids Are All Right).

The Spirits are handed out to films with budgets under 20m, the day before the Oscars at the tail end of February.
