Coppola wins Golden Lion at Venice

Sofia Coppola has won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival for her film, Somewhere. The jury, headed by her close friend Quentin Tarantino, awarded her the Golden Lion, for the film, which is about an actor who sees the emptiness of his existence through the eyes of his child.
Tarantino said the film had enchanted the juror from its first screening, with the artistry they were looking for in a winner.
Accepting the award, the director thanked her father, Francis Ford Coppola, for teaching her to make films.
The Silver Lion, for best director, went to Spain’s Alex de la Iglesia for his film, A Sad Trumpet Ballad, which also won him the best screenplay award.
Vincent Gallo was honoured as the best actor, as a terror suspect plotting his escape, in Essential Killing. The best actress prize went to Ariana Lebed, from Greece, for her role in Attenberg.
