DangerMouse animator Cosgrove honoured by BAFTA

One of the men behind the classic British animations DangerMouse and Count Duckula, Brian Cosgrove, is to receive a Special Award for his contribution to the industry at this weekend’s BAFTA Children’s Awards.

He will be presented with the honour by Sir David Jason, who provided the voice for many of Cosgrove’s characters, including DangerMouse, Count Duckula, Toad in The Wind In The Willows, the eponymous BFG.

Cosgrove and his business partner Mark Hall set up their animation studio Cosgrove Hall in Manchester in 1975 and scored early hits with shows including Noddy and Chorlton and the Wheelies.

More recently, the company has produced Postman Pat, Bill & Ben and Andy Pandy.

Harvey Elliott, who chairs BAFTA’s Children’s Committee said Cosgrove was one of the country’s most respected and influential animators, and had helped to “develop, nurture and inspire the next generation of animation talent.”

Cosgrove said he was thrilled to receive the honour, saying he’d been lucky to have spent forty years making a career out of what he would have chosen to do as a hobby. He had also been fortunate, he added, to find the right person – Mark Hall – with whom to build a company that gave work to a whole generation of artists and film makers, and brought pleasure to many generations of viewers.
