Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tyrannosaur and Steve McQueen’s upcoming Shame have each picked up seven nominations at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

We Need to Talk About Kevin and Kill List each have six nominations, while Richard Ayoade’s Submarine is up for five awards.

There’s a particularly high profile field in the contest for the Douglas Hickox Award for the best first-time director, with the actors Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus) and Paddy Considine (Tyrannosaur) in the running with the comedian Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), among others.

Elliot Grove, who founded the awards in 1998, said the nominees showed that British independent filmmakers were rising to the creative challenge of making astounding movies in the midst of economic chaos.

A committee of seventy members selected the nominations from nearly two hundred films. The winners – to be honoured at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London on December 4th – will be decided by a jury including the director Josh Appignanesi, the actor David Thewlis and the actress Ruth Wilson.
