King's Speech leads BIFA nominations

Tom Hooper’s film about King George VI trying to overcome his stammer, The King’s Speech, has picked up eight nominations at the British Independent Film Awards.
The film is up for honours in categories including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Colin Firth, with Best Supporting Actor nominations for both Geoffrey Rush and Guy Pearce.
Alien-film Monsters, Never Let Me Go and The Arbor each have six nominations.
Mike Leigh (Another Year) and Matthew Vaughn (Kick-****) are in the running for Best Director, alongside Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) and Gareth Edwards (Monsters).
Edwards is also up for the Best Debut Director award, against Debs Gardner-Paterson (Africa United), Chris Morris (Four Lions), Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock) and Clio Barnard, who won two awards at the London Film Festival for The Arbor.
Colin Firth faces competition for the Best Actor prize from Jim Broadbent (Another Year), Riz Ahmed (Four Lions), Scoot McNairy (Monsters) and Aidan Gillen (Treacle Junior).
The Best Actress category will be between Ruth Sheen (Another Year), Manjinder Virk (The Arbor), Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham), Andrea Risborough (Brighton Rock) and Carey Mulligan who’ll be hoping for a second successive Oscar nomination, this time for Never Let Me Go.
The awards will be handed out on December 5th at a ceremony hosted by the actor James Nesbitt.
