He hasn’t made too many films, but when he puts his mind to it, Terrence Malick knows how to earn critical praise, awards and nominations at the highest level, including Badlands, Days of Heaven and the Thin Red Line.
Now, his fifth feature in a career that’s spanned nearly four decades, has earned him the Palme d’Or for the Best Film at Cannes.
Tree of Life – starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain – was picked by the jury, headed by the acting legend Robert De Niro.
Two films shared the runner-up Grand Prize. Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s fourth film in competition at Cannes, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia, was honoured alongside the former Palme d’Or winners, the Dardenne brothers from Belgium, for their latest film The Kid with the Bike.
The Jury Prize, from among the twenty two selected films, went to the French actress-turned-director Maïwenn Le Besco, for Poliss.
Denmark’s Nicolas Winding Refn picked up the prize for Best Director for his English-language thriller Drive.
The Israeli writer-director Joseph Cedar took the Best Screenplay award for Footnote.
Although Lars von Trier surpassed all previous controversy in his event-filled career by being ejected from the festival for joking that he sympathised with Hitler, his film Melancholia still featured on the closing night. Its star Kirsten Dunst won the Best Actress prize.
The Best Actor was France’s Jean Dujardin for The Artist.
Argentina’s Pablo Giorgelli picked up the Camera d’Or for Best First-time Director for Las Acacias and the Best Short Film went to Country, by Ukraine’s Maryna Vroda.
