The prize for the best film in the second strand at Cannes, Un Certain Regard, has gone to Mexico’s Despues de Lucia, directed by Michel Franco.

The jury chairman, the British actor Tim Roth, said there had been “passionate” deliberations over an “extraordinarily strong group of films.”

Twenty films from seventeen countries were in the running. The second, Special Jury Prize went to the French film Le Grand Soir.

Two prizes were awarded for acting in the Un Certain Regard strand, Suzanne Clement for her role in Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways and Emilie Dequenne in A Perdre La Raison, from Joachim Lafosse.
