Scorsese announces Gangs TV spin-off

The Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese is developing a TV series based on his film Gangs of New York.

Scorsese is working with Miramax, the company that released the 2002 film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis.

The new project – which is not yet linked to a TV network – will expand on the film’s 19th Century New York underworld, be exploring the birth of organised crime as far away as Chicago and New Orleans.

In a statement, Scorsese – who’s also behind the Boardwalk Empire series – said the era was too rich to explore in a single two-hour film. He says the series will provide the time and creative freedom to bring the colourful world to life, while showing the implications it had – and continues to have – on society.
