Strong British presence at Globe nominations dominated by Birdman

Golden Globe statuesA day after the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations, the Golden Globes have confirmed the media satire Birdman as the front-runner for this year’s awards season, with seven nominations, including Best Comedy, Best Actor for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton for Best Supporting Actor and Alejandro González Iñárritu for both directing and writing.

But much of the British talent honoured by SAG find themselves in the spotlight again, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley nominated for The Imitation Game, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones for The Theory of Everything and Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl.

With the Hollywood Foreign Press Association separating films into Dramas and Comedies, twice as many stars are able to share the glory, making room for more British nominees. Pride has earned itself a nod in the Best Comedy category, while Ralph Fiennes picks up an unexpected nod for his lead role in The Grand Budapest Hotel and both Emily Blunt and Dame Helen Mirren are in the running for the Best Actress in a Comedy category, for Into the Woods and The Hundred-Foot Journey respectively. David Oyelowo also earns a nomination in the Best Dramatic Actor category for playing Martin Luther King in Selma.

Other films with multiple nominations include Boyhood, Foxcatcher and St Vincent.

There is also good showing from the UK in the television categories, with Downton Abbey and its star Joanne Froggatt featuring in the TV Drama categories, Dominic West nominated for starring in The Affair, The Missing is up for the Best Miniseries trophy, Martin Freeman is nominated for Fargo and the former Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais will be returning to the Beverly Hilton hotel to see whether Derek can earn him the trophy that he last held for The Office.
