The Avengers, which is titled Marvel Avengers Assemble in the UK, rocked the weekend box office in its North American debut, shattering all domestic opening weekends with estimated $200 million. That take is significantly higher than the previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2, which earned $169.2 million on its opening weekend last year.

The comic book flick, which unites Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye against an alien threat, has made more than the sum of its parts.

Far behind in the second place was last weekend box office winner, Think Like A Man, with $8 million. The dating comedy, which was produced for only $12 million, has made $73 million in the US box office.

The Hunger Game is still in the game, claiming the 3rd spot with $5.7 million. The sci fi thriller has made a total of $380 million in the US.

Zac Efrons drama The Lucky One landed in the fourth spot with $5.5 milion, followed by The Pirates! Band of Misfits, which earned $5.4 million.

Only British Comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel dared to debut this weekend, taking in $750 thousand.

Next week, The Avengers will be challenged by Tim Burtons Dark Shadows, featuring Jonny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer.
