The Environmental fable, Dr. Seuss The Lorax, broke this years box office record with $70.7 million earning in its debut weekend. Adapted from the 1971 Dr. Seuss classic, the 3D animated flick, which tells the story of a boy trying to locate a mystical and cantankerous tree guardian,  is voiced by Danny DeVito, Zac Efron and Taylor Swift.


Trailing way behind in the second place was the found-footage style romp, Project X, with a respectable $22 million. Made  for just $12 million, the teens comedy is about a birthday party that explodes into an epic proportions.

Last weekends no. 1, Act of Valour, retreated to the third place with $13.7 million, followed by Safe House, which took $7.2 million.

The Oscars winner, The Artist, enjoyed a surge in the box office, adding $3.9 million it coffer. The Best Picture has made $37.1 million in the US box office.
