PGA recognises Skyfall in the 2012 Best Movie Nominations

Bond gets a PGA nomination for the Best Movie of 2012

Unveiling it’s nomination for the Best Movie in 2012 this morning, The Producers Guild of America (PGA) honoured the James Bond movie, Skyfall, for the first time since the inception of the franchise 24 years ago. The 23rd installment is the most successful Bond film to date.

Nine other movies were also included on the list: Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Django Unchained, Lincoln, Moonrise Kingdom and Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The PGA list reflects the growing consensus about the best movies of last year, for all these movies have already been recognised by other organisations, such as the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild and the HFPA’s Golden Globes.

Other than Skyfall and Beasts of the Southern Wild, all the above movies received nods for the Golden Globes last month, either in the Drama or the Comedy & Musical categories. Two British comedies The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen were absent from the PGA nomination.

There were no surprises in the best animations nominations either, completely matching the Golden Globes list, which included Frankenweenie, Wreck-It-Ralph, Brave and Rise of the Guardians.

The PGA awards, to be handed out on Jan 26th at the Beverly Hilton hotel, are considered a reliable predictor of the Oscars, because many of their voters are members of the Academy. In fact, in the last 23 years, 16 PGA winners went on to win an Oscar for Best Picture.
