Iron Man 3 Tops US Charts with $175 Million

At the top of the domestic charts this week is Iron Man 3 with $175.3 million.  Iron Man is the only superhero from the Marvel series to take this much money and is the second-biggest domestic opening of all time and worldwide gross that is already higher than the total for Iron Man 2.

Starring Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, the film follows Tony Stark into an adventure to save the world from a terrorist known as the Mandarin.

Pain and Gain is second in the charts with just $7.6 million. Featuring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie, this action film is the story of three bodybuilders living in Florida who get caught up in a kidnapping scheme that goes wrong. Based on a true story, the movie is directed by Michael Bay and fell from number one in the charts.

Third in the domestic charts is 42, a movie about the life story of Jackie Robinson and his fight to be the first African American baseball player in the major leagues. The movie brought in $6.2 million and has held been at the top of the charts for weeks now. 42 features Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford and Nicole Beharie and is produced by Warner Bros.

Oblivion, a story of a drone repairman who begins to question what he knows after discovering a crashed spacecraft, takes fourth in the charts with $5.8 million. Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko star in the film directed by Joseph Kosinski. The movie was second in the box office last week.

The Croods, an animation comedy that has been in the top ten since its opening on March 22 is in fifth this week with $4.2 million in revenue. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds are some of the celebrity voices behind the animated caveman family.

Sixth in the box office is The Big Wedding produced by Lionsgate. The film features Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Susan Sarandon among others. Coming in at $3.9 million the comedy shows the adventures and mishaps that a long-divorced couple faces when they decide to fake their marriage as their family unites for a wedding.

Mud, starring Matthew McConnaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Michael Shannon and produced by Roadside Attractions, is sixth in the charts with $2.2 million. The film rose from tenth in the charts last week.

Eighth at the box office this week is Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful starring James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz and directed by Sam Raimi. The adventure is about a small-time magician who finds himself in an enchanted land and is left to help the inhabitants of Oz get through their problems.

Scary Movie 5 is ninth with $1.4 million. Starring Charlie Sheen and Ashley Tisdale the comedy is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and is about a couple who bring home their newborn baby and begins to experience supernatural activity.

Tenth in the charts this week is The Place Beyond the Pines with $1.3 million. Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper star in this drama about a motorcycle stunt rider who robs banks in order to support his family and must face the consequences.

At the top of the worldwide charts this week are Iron Man 3 with $351.2 million, The Croods with $21.6 million and Oblivion with $12.3 million.

Opening this week in the UK are Star Trek Into Darkness on May 9 and Deadfall on May 10.
