The seminars are giving by Sandra Shevey an authority on Film Theory having interviewed all the greats including Alfred Hitchcock, John Lennon, Joan Blondell, Jane Russell, Richard Harris, Rock Hudson, Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, Lauren Hutton, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand and many more. Over the course of three evenings Sandra will introduce three fascinating topics of Film Theory.
    -Feminism of 40’s Hollywood
    -The French New Wave
    -British “Kitchen Sink” Drama’s
    Feminism of 40’s Hollywood
Feminism of the 40s will look at the role of women protagonists as well as the woman screenwriters who dominated the Hollywood studios. This WAS the age of women. With men off fighting the war in Europe, American women were playing a greater part than ever in society and films reflected this assertive role. The 40’ssaw the emergence of the career girl with actresses such as Rosalind Russell, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck and Claudette Colbert doing the things which men did a generation earlier. The studios were replete with women screenwriters and at no other time in history (except possibly the silent film era) were they in such abundance. Vera Caspary, Lenore Coffee, Leigh Brackett, Virginia Van Upp and many others were writing the major motion pictures of the day. Whilst we will compare them with now, the emphasis will be on them. To include excerpts of audio interviews with Anita Loos, Adela Rogers St John and George Cukor.
    The French New Wave
The French New Wave acknowledges that it owes a lot of its momentum to the work of the American masters such as Billy Wilder, Alfred Hitchcock and others. We will look at the work of Truffaut and Goddard and others of the New Wave to explore how they reworked existing themes and thus reinvented French cinema. The cinema verite of Truffaut will be analyzed and an interview with the director conducted (using an interpreter) by Sandra in the 70’s will be aired. We will also include excerpts from a rare audio interview with Mastroianni.
    British “Kitchen Sink” Drama’s
British “Kitchen Sink” drama’s of Wesker, Osborne, Pinter and others. The appearance of an ironing board in Richardson’s “Look Back In Anger” augured in the age of the common man in British cinema. It was the films of Richardson, Reisz and Anderson which paved the way for the work of Frears, Leigh and other contemporary British film talent. We will analyze the turning point in British drama and the part played in the British New Wave by the Royal Court theatre and the writers who went on to change cinema having had their work start there. Audio excerpts from interviews with Richard Harris will be included.
Each event will be supported by relevant film clips.
The seminars are scheduled for 3rd, 10th and 17th May from 6.30pm to 9.30pm in central London. (venue to be confirmed)
Each seminar is £25 each or £60 for all three.
