The film tells the story of stuttering of King George VI (Colin Firth) and his treatment by an Austrian speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush) in the run-up to WWII.
David Fincher’s facebook film, The Social Network and David O’Russel’s boxing drama, The Fighter, achieved 6 nods, while Darren Aronofsky’s dark ballerina thriller, Black Swan, and Chris Nolan’s Sci-Fi blockbuster, Inception, received 4 nods. The Kids Are All Right has also received 4 nods, including best Comedy or Musical, alongside Burlesque, Alice in Wonderland, Red and The Tourist.
Competing in the best performance by an actress are Halle Berry (Frankie and Alice), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bones), Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine).
Annette Bening and Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All right), Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Angelina Jolie (The Tourist) and Emma Stone (Easy A) comprise the list of the best performance in Comedy and Musical.
Four of the nominated actors for best performance have played real life characters in their movies. Colin Firth plays King George VI in The King’s Speech, Jesse Eisenberg plays facebook founder, Mark Zukerman, in The Social Network, James Franko plays mountaineer, Aron Ralston, and Mark Wahlberg plays boxer, Irish Mick. Ryan Gosling is the only contender who plays a fictional character in Blue Valentine.
Johnny Depp tops the list of the best performance in a Musical or a comedy with two nominations for his roles in Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist, competing against Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version), Jake Gyllenhaal (Love and Other Drugs) and Kevin Spacey (Casino Jack).
Best animation nominations went for Despicable Me, How To Train Your Dragon, The Illusionist, Tangled and Toy Story 3.
The foreign film’s list includes Biutiful (Spain/Mexico), The Concert (France), The Edge (Russia), I am Love (Italy) and In a Better World (Denmark).
The nominations were announced in LA this morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The winners will be revealed at the 68th Golden Globe ceremony, which is held on January 16th.
