Hi, I’m in the early stages of production for an NHS training video. This video could lead to others.
The training video is to be aimed as carers/doctors for patients suffering from mental illness. Of course this is a sensitive issue and experienced actors are more likely to get the work due to this.
The final training video will be screened at meetings and presentations and will be made available to people across the NHS healthcare.

The shoot looks like it will be taking place at the end of June. We will be holding casting sessions before hand.
The shoot is to take place on the grounds of Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Expenses will be paid. The shoot will be for 2 days. You may only be needed for one.

I’m interested to know, as this is obviously a commercial and profit making venture, why you are only offering your actors expenses only remuneration.
As a newly qualified filmaker you are to be congratulated on securing an NHS contract, but your pricing negotiations should really have included minimum Equity rates for your actors particularly as you specifically request experience.
I would hate to think you won the contract and undercut your competitors by making the concious decision to offer expenses only reimbursement as this would be classed as exploitation.

There was an uproar in Shooting poeple a few months ago with regards to the same issue, i.e. only paying expenses to actors on a corporate shooting.
Strangely enough the the corporate highlighted in Shooting Poeple was also for the NHS…. spooky huh??Well, I emailed Carrie yesterday asking if the roles were unpaid or if the expenses would be for the audition (I worked on a corporate where I’ve been paid expenses for travel to the audition). So far no reply. I’d really appreciate it Carrie if you would answer on this forum so we can all see what’s what.

AntoinetteFrom my expereince in production work, I feel actors are too quick to argue about having expenses paid and a vhs copy. As I have worked in production over the last few years, I have had to pay out and be out of pocket to create any sort of work. I have worked for free on almost every project I have worked on. I have also been happy to shoot actors showreels for cost.
I am aware it’s not a great deal the actors are getting, but on shoots, production teams make it so they gain as much expereince of the industry as possible at no cost to themselves. It’s an industry where the more expereince you have, the greater your chances of landing paid work. I know alot of FANTASTIC actors that still accept unpaid work as they know the expereince is invaluable. There are too many inexpereinced actors looking for high paid work from budgets that just manage to cover the high costs of equipment.
I did actually come onto this forum today to update my posting saying that I have managed to budget that actors WILL be paid.
Please do not send me your details for this position as I feel you do not understand the industry you are working in.

I am a post graduate film maker working as an admin temp for the NHS. I have offered to make a video for them for training purposes and will only be claiming expenses myself. . It’s as simple as that.
i think actors writing such catty replies to my posting should save their time and not bother.

I’ve done loads of unpaid work for students and to be fair, your first posting didn’t mention any of the things in your reply “would you work for nowt…? YES I WOULD.
A lot of actors on this and other lists would and do work for nothing when they feel they’re helping out. It’s when commercial companies ask for free work that people get upset and quite rightly – this is their job after all. If you had explained your situtation in your first email, then I think the response would have been different. Is it worth my while sending you my CV?

I’ve worked for serious TV commercials such as travel agency, Embassy and Sheraton Skyline Hotel’s training DVD (not only cheeky ad such as food or car!).

The original posting was to put feelers out for actors interested first and formost in the production. I haven’t secured any money for anything more than expenses YET although am in talks about equity rates. I think people are too quick to assume things. Just because things weren’t mentioned in my original casting, people have filled the gaps in themselves.
Thank you for your rational reply to my follow up posting. CarrieSorry, I meant that more than expenses will be paid….. the rates the actors are going to be paid has not been confirmed as yet so is not secure. There will be a wage though for certain. Just the actual amount has not been secured.
This is by far the most trouble I have had from putting a posting on here! lol
