The British-born actress Naomi Watts has been signed up to play Princess Diana in the film Caught In Flight, which follows the Princess of Wales during the last two years of her life.
The fllm, to be directed by the German Oliver Hirschbiegel, who was Oscar-nominated for the Hitler biopic Downfall, will explore how finding true personal happiness for the first time enabled her to become an international campaigner and humanitarian. It will begin shooting in the UK later this year.
Oscar-nominated Watts – last seen in J Edgar and next to appear in The Impossible, alongside Ewan McGregor – said it was an honour to be playing such an iconic role. “Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
“I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress, who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana,” remarked Hirschbiegel.
Robert Bernstein, from Ecosse Films, the company behind Caught In Flight, said it was very exciting to be working with one of the finest actresses on what would be a powerful and poignant film. “She will encompass the role beautifully,” he insisted.
